The whole of the Rydal / Grasmere / Ambleside / Langdale region of the Lake district has always been a favourite area for me, and is somewhere I’ve been visiting for over 25 years, although it has been rare for my short visits to coincide with fine weather, especially in February. This shot was taken from the Coffin trail, a route between Grasmere and Ambleside which (surprisingly) was used to transport the dead from Ambleside and Rydal to the church of St Oswald’s in Grasmere, where William Wordsworth is now buried. These days, it is a pretty walk which bypasses Dove Cottage, where Wordsworth wrote some of his most famous verse.
